25th Annual Night Of Thunder
National Trail Raceway, Hebron, OH
July 17th, 2010

Photo on file by Bob Wenzelburger
The GLNFCC was scheduled in at National Trail Raceway to be a part of their Night Of Thunder jet car spectacle. On hand were two jet dragsters, one jet funny car, The Cool Bus and Bob Motz's Jet Kenworth.

The show began with the drivers of the exhibition cars being introduced to the crowd while riding down the return road in various classic convertibles.

First out for The GLNFCC was The Doran Chevrolet Camaro taking on The Damn Yankee Vega. The Vega was out first and took the win.

Next up was The Dazed & Confused Camaro taking on The Fuelish Monza. Both cars boiled the hides on the burn out and the crowd went wild. The Monza had some issues shortly off the line and went sideways about half-track and took out a foam block. The Camaro stopped the timers at 7.43/178.

Last pair was The Old & Fuelish Corvette taking on The Snakebite Mustang. Both cars left on cue with The Mustang going through the lights at 7.05/197 and The Corvette close behind with a 7.29/186.

Second round came up quick, as there was a possible storm in the horizon. The cars did not get the proper cool down time and it seem to show on this round of racing.

First up was The Fuelish Monza taking on The Doran Chevrolet Camaro. Both cars seem to be stunned by the tree, with the Camaro finally moving first. The Camaro shook the tire real bad and had to get off the power when the wall seemed to be getting closer. The Monza took the win.

Second pair was The Dazed & Confused Camaro taking on The Old & Fuelish Corvette. If your fogging for bugs you want these two guys around. After their burnouts the tree was not visible. The Corvette was off first and took the win with The Camaro having to shut off as the car came close to the wall. The left lane was an issue on this round.

Winner
Mike Klontz
Driver of
Snakebite
Last pair was The Snakebite and The Damn Yankee Vega. These two teams have built up a rivalry this year and are constantly going head to head. The Damn Yankee team knew they had to have something in the bank for the bigger C.I. Hemi, but unfortunately it was a red light, handing The Snakebite the win.

Photo on file by Bob Wenzelburger

The two quickest cars came back for the final. This pitted The Snakebite Mustang (7.05) against The Old & Fuelish Corvette ( 7.27). It was getting late and both teams were worried about the dew setting in and affecting the track bite. After two great burnouts the crowd was into it. The Snakebite was off with a .038 light giving him The Good Vibration Reaction Time Award. The Corvette was a little late and tried to catch the Mustang but came up a little short. The Snakebite crossed the finish line at 7.07/193 with The Corvette hot on his heels with a 7.24/185.

The GLNFCC had a great time at National Trail Raceway and looks forward to going back soon.

Next stop The Marion County Nostalgia Funny Car Nationals at Marion County International Raceway in LaRue, Oh. August 7th. For more information please visit the event website: www.nostalgiafunnycarnationals.com.

GLNFCC July 4th WEEKEND DOUBLE HEADER
ROUND TWO
Quaker City Raceway, Salem, OH
July 3rd, 2010

Saturday morning we had a funny car caravan leaving New York and Heading toward Salem, Ohio.

This race was billed as Mid Summer Explosion. Scheduled to appear was Danny O'Days SuperWinch Wheelstander, two fuel cars Carl West in the Untouchable altered and Bill Walls with his Nitro Flyer front engine dragster, plus 10 cars from The GLNFCC.

It was a clear summer day, a little warm but dry. As the day progressed the place filled up with spectators looking to feel the thunder.

Vic Miller who is on a world tour stopped by to make a few runs. He has Ken Veney's Original 72 Vega. Vic found this car in Hawaii and had it shipped to Oregon, then over the past several years he has restored it to its original glory. Vic and his son are covering nostalgia events in the Midwest and then will be heading back to Oregon in July.

The Veneys Vega and the fuel cars opened the show, next up The GLNFCC.

First pair up was The Blown Money Nova pairing up against Sharky's Machine Omni. Both cars made two good burnouts with The Omni doing a few dry hops. The Nova was off first with a great reaction time of .29 and never looked back, running a 7.27/173 to a losing 8.23. That was a great run out of the small block Nova.

Second pair was David vs. Goliath with the previous nights winner Snakebite taking on the 56 T-Bird. The T-Bird was throwing everything it had at the Mustang but unfortunately The T-Bird moved before the tree was even activated. Handing the win to the Mustang.

Next up was The Old & Fuelish Corvette taking on Butch Chovan in The Red Baron Mustang II. Butch ran The Red Baron as an injected car last year and he decided to step up and put together a blower motor. This was not Butch's first event as we had him fill in at a race in Columbus last year. The big Hemi over powered the BBC and The Corvette crossed the stripe at 7.22/185.

Next up a pair of 69 Camaro's. The Original bodied Mike Burkhart Doran Chevrolet taking on The Dazed & Confused Camaro driven by Jerry Streb. The Doran Camaro was out first and held on with a 7.61/177.

Last pair for the round was The Solid Rock Mustang taking on The Damn Yankee Vega. These two cars ran each other the week before at The Pinks All Out Show in Joliet, IL. The Mustang got the better of the Vega and The Damn Yankee team was looking for redemption. Both cars did burnouts with Mustang barking out a few dry hops. The Mustang was out first but could not hold the Hemi back. The Vega turned on the clocks with a 7.39/184.

The round was capped off with the Superwinch Wheelstander and Daryl Arnold and his wheelstanding golf cart.

Second round started with Vic Miller making another pass with the Vega.

First up for The GLNFCC was The Detroit Thunder taking on The Red Baron. The Mustang II was out first but seem to have some engine problems at half-track. The T-Bird seems to be back as they ran a 7.51/179.

Split Winner!!
Mike Klontz and Butch Chovan
Driver of
Snakebite & Red Baron

Next up The Dazed & Confused Camaro taking on the Snakebite Mustang. The Camaro did almost a half-track burnout. The Mustang did turn on the red bulb, but made a exciting run with the car getting a little out of shape at about the 1,000 foot mark. Then stopped the clocks with a 6.91/200.

Next up The Doran Chevrolet taking on the Damn Yankee Vega. The right lane seem to have a spot down track that made the drivers work a little and proved to be exciting for the spectators. This run was exactly that. The Camaro is a short wheelbase car and can be a handful. When Steve hit the hump the car took a sharp right and came o so close to the wall. The Vega took the win with a 7.53/183.

Next up were two guys that have fun putting on a show. Lance Good in The Sharky's Machine and Rocky Ausec in The Solid Rock Mustang. Both cars did great burnouts and tempted one another with a few dry hops. Lance did not wait for the tree so he handed the win to Rocky.

Last pair was to be the two fastest from the first round, which were The Old & Fuelish Corvette (7.22/185) and Blown Money Nova (7.27/173). The Nova popped the burst panel on the first run. After replacing the burst panel and warming up the car it was found that the intake manifold was also damaged. The Corvette made a single after smoking out the fans with a burnout. The Corvette made a statement with this ran putting down a 7.29/184.

The Good Vibration Quick Reaction Time Award was split. Mike Klontz in The Snakebite and Butch Chovan in The Red Baron Mustang II both had a .14 reaction time.

Thanks to everyone at Quaker City Raceway for making The GLNFCC a part of their schedule for the past three years. Also thanks to Good Vibrations and Mickey Thompson Performance Tires And Wheels for supporting The GLNFCC.

Next stop July 17th is at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, OH for their Night Of Fire Race.

GLNFCC July 4th WEEKEND DOUBLE HEADER
ROUND ONE
Dunn Tire Raceway Park, Clarence NY
July 2nd, 2010

The GLNFCC headed out for what is becoming a Fourth Of July tradition. This year we took 10 cars to both tracks.

The first stop was at Dunn Tire Raceway Park in Clarence N.Y. Several of the cars put on a display at Lunchtime at The Quaker Steak and Lube just down the street from the track.

By 8:00 the place was busy with well over 200 racecars and buzzing with spectators. The drag strip is the straight away to their oval track. It is a 1/8-mile with a short shutdown.

First pair out was Sharky's Machine taking on The Damn Yankee; The Vega left on the Shark but turned on the red bulb. Which is very uncharacteristic of The Damn Yankee.

Next up was The Solid Rock Mustang taking on The Doran Chevrolet. This was the Camaro first trip to this track. Both cars had some issues getting hooked to the track surface with the Camaro crossing the finish line first.

Next up was The Old & Fuelish Corvette Taking on The Snakebite Mustang. Both cars did killer burnouts with the smoke just hanging in the air. The Snakebite took the win with a 4.43/158

Next up The Visionary Cuda and The Blown Money Nova. Scott is still shaking down the Cuda's new Hemi. He will get a handle on it soon and when he does look out, I expect to see a 6 second pass out of it some day. The Nova rattled the tires pretty good, which in turn shut off the motor.

Last pair was The Detroit Thunder T-Bird and The Dazed & Confused Camaro. Unfortunately The Camaro had some engine issues during the warm up and was unable to run. So the T-Bird made a single.

Winner
Shaun McHattie
Driver of
Blown Money
Second round came and the sun had set. Funny cars running at night are cool. First up was the Blown Money Nova making a single. This time the Nova hooked up and stopped the clocks at 5.03/128.

Next up The Visionary Cuda Taking on The Solid Rock Mustang. Both cars did great burnouts. When they were staging the Cuda was spitting fire out of the zoomies and was shut off. The Mustang made a single.

Next up was The Detroit Thunder taking on John Decort in The Old & Fuelish Corvette. John did another killer burnout that had the spectators screamin. The T-Bird laid down a great 4.71/142 run but threw it away on a red light.

Next up was the Doran Chevrolet taking on Sharky's Machine Omni. Both cars did great burnouts and a few old style dry hops. The Camaro is a clutch car and seem to have issues getting a hold of the track surface. The car shook violently twice with Steve shutting it off early.

Last pair was the two quickest from the first round. The Snakebite Mustang (4.43) taking on The Damn Yankee Vega (4.83). Both drivers were pump up as these two have built up a rivalry over the last year. Both cars were ready for this race. The Vega turned on the red bulb and ran a 4.79/132 to The Snakebite's 475/118. Giving the Mustang the race win.

Shaun McHattie in The Blown Money Nova won The Good Vibrations Reaction Time award with a .09 light. To show that was not a fluke he also had a .44 reaction time in the second round.

Now on to Quaker City Raceway on Saturday for another cool 10 car Funny Car show.

9th Annual Gasser/Nostalgia Reunion
June 5th, 2010
Thompson Raceway Park, Thompson, Ohio

Photos by Jeff Unfried
This was the 9th Annual installment of this race. Gasser Magazine previously supported the race. They had pulled out this year to move their event to another location

The absence of Gasser Magazine did not seem to have any effect on the turnout of racecars, or spectators. Friday brought a record number of racecars and some great racing. Saturday's spectator count was down some but that was due to the heavy thunderstorms that surrounded the area. The rain held off till almost 8:00 Pm., by then the exhibition cars had ran and they were down to several runs for the gamblers race.

The GLNFCC brought four cars to this show. They were The Dazed & Confused 69 Camaro, Visionary 70 Cuda, Fuelish 77 Monza and The Sharky's Machine 79 Omni.

First round paired The Fuelish Monza against Sharkey's Machine. This was the first outing this year for The Klingerman Brother's Monza. Tracy made the trip alone and was able to get some help from two temporarily sidelined GLNFCC members, Chris Gerber and Johnny Kilburg who previously helped campaigned The Rubber City Connection Trans Am. Sharky's Machine was also using a temporary crew man Steve Timoszyk.

Photos by Jeff Unfried

Both cars started out with two great burnouts, with The Omni doing a few dryhops. The Omni left hard with The Monza taking a hard left into the wall forcing Tracy to lift and giving The Omni the win.

Next pair up was The Visionary Cuda against The Dazed & Confused Camaro. This was only the second outing for The Cuda with the new Hemi power plant. Micky Hale was helping The Visionary crew out at this event. The Hemi sure sounded strong with a good burnout. Jerry Streb driving the Camaro gave the crowd a thrill with a more than half-track burnout. While The Cuda waited for the Camaro to back up he did a few dryhops. Both cars left hard with the Camaro taking the win with a 7.43/179.

First pair up for the second round was The Fuelish Monza taking on The Visionary Cuda. Both cars smoked out the starting line with their burnouts. The Cuda moved first but was not able to hold off the Monza; Tracy took the win with The Monza moving around a little bit but was able to keep it under control with a 7.56/175. It seems that Scott is getting a handle on the tune-up for the Hemi as The Cuda did improve its time from the previous round.

Winner
Lance Good
Driver of
Sharky's Machine

Photos by Jeff Unfried
Last pair up was the two quickest from the first round. The Dazed & Confused Camaro taking on The Sharky's Machine Omni. Lance Good driving The Omni must have had his Wheaties for breakfast as he pulled a .051 light on the first round and finished with a .021 on his second run. This did not help as he seem to get into trouble about half-track and was out of it early. The Camaro barreled past with another great run 7.45/180.

Lance good took The Good Vibrations Reaction Time Award with the .021. This is Lance's first reaction time award.

Next up our July Fourth double header, 10 cars at Dunn Tire Raceway Park on July 2nd. The next day the group takes the show to Quaker City Dragstrip.

Old School Nostalgia Nights
May 29th, 2010
Skyview Drags, Tioga Center, NY

Photos by Greg Zyla
Nostalgia drag racing made its debut at Skyview Dragway this Memorial Day weekend. Along with their usual bracket program they had over forty cars from the touring NETO nostalgia circuit and four funny cars that run with The Great Lake Nostalgia Funny Car Circuit.

The Neto cars provided a great heads up program with a lot of old style wheels up launches and unpredictable runs that come with the short wheelbase old style gassers.

The four nostalgia funny cars provided a good blend of early and late 70's style bodies. There was the Screamin Eagle 77 Trans Am, Total Insanity 77 Monza, Visionary 70 Cuda and The Boggs Brothers AMX.

First pair out was the Screaming Eagle Trans Am taking on the Visionary Cuda; both cars did great burnouts and a few old style dry hops. This was the Cuda's first outing with a Hemi; Scott had previously ran a BBC Chevrolet in the car. The Trans Am was out first and was the first to the finish line.

Second pair was The Total Insanity Monza taking on the Boggs Brother AMX.

Photos by Greg Zyla
The Monza did a totally insane full track burnout, just like they did in the seventies. Both cars left hard with the Monza taking the win.

Second round pitted the first round losers together and the first round winners together.

Winner
Chris Massarella
Driver of
Total Insanity
The Visionary Cuda was up against The Boggs Brothers AMX. Both cars wowed the crowd with long Smokey burnouts and a few short dry hops. The Cuda was late off the line and that was all the small block AMX needed to get ahead of the big Hemi for the win.

Last pair out was the two quickest from the first round. The Screamin Eagle Trans Am came out with a flame show that would make you think he was blending a little Nitro in the tank.

Photos by Greg Zyla
The Monza was not intimidated as Chris pulled out a great reaction time and held on for the win. The Trans Am got out of shape and coasted over the finish line.

Chris Massarella in The Total Insanity Monza won the Reaction Time award that is sponsored by Good Vibrations. The GLNFCC would like to thank the great people at Skyview for letting us bring our traveling funny car show to their track and we look forward to going back to Skyview in the future.

Next stop Thompson Raceway Park on June 5th.

Beaver Springs Raceway Memorial Day Nationals
May 29th, 2010
Beaver Springs Dragway, Beaver Springs, PA

Photos by Jeff Unfried
As is tradition Beaver Bob always goes all out for the Memorial Day Weekend. Friday night started the weekend with Bob Motz’s Kenworth. Saturday The GLNFCC was there with 8 of their nostalgia funny cars.

The line up gave the GLNFCC a chance to pair up some East Coast funny cars that don’t get much of a chance to square up with some of the OH & PA regulars.

First round opened up with The Blown Money 69 Nova taking on The Rollin' Stoned Cuda driven by Bob Rosetty. Both cars did a killer burnout. Bob was out first, actually capturing the R.T. Award on this run. But it went bad shortly after that. Bob was in the right lane and took a hard left forcing Shaun in The Nova to lift. Bob got the Cuda back in his lane, but not after taking out a block.

Second pair was the Sharky's Machine Omni taking on The Sweetman Brothers Citation. The Omni had some fresh fiberglass repairs as Lance was cone hunting himself two weeks ago at Kil-Kare Dragway in Xenia, OH. The Sweetmans had not ran much last year so they were eager to get back on the track. They left all most even but the Citation cross the finish line first with a 7.33/180 to 7.69/174.

Photos by Jeff Unfried

Third pair was another car that had been put away for awhile. Rick Stambaugh who has driven funny cars since the 70’s has ran his New Generation 74 Corvette with his son Matt and daughter Robin. This car has a story to it. The Body is Ezra Boggs Moby Dick body and the chassis is a Custom Body Chassis. Rick is tuning now and Matt is doing the driving. They were pitted up against The Excalibur Corvette. Both of these cars are clutch cars and it was great to hear them as they both staged pulling about 7,000 RPMS. The New Generation Corvette took the lead and never looked back with a 7.35/192 to a 8.53/162

Last pair was the burnout king John DeCort in The Old & Fuelish Corvette taking on The Tweety's Rat Vega driven by Bob Toth with guest crew chief Lou Sgro. Both cars where a little late off the line with the Vega taking the win at 7.42/181 to Johns 7.72/173..

Second round started with The Excalibur Corvette taking on The Blown Money Nova. The Corvette redlite and then right at the hit the Nova lost power. The Nova broke a throttle cable.

Photos by Jeff Unfried

Second pair pitted the burnout kings from the first round. The Old & Fuelish Corvette against The Rollin Stone Cuda. Both cars did their usual smokey burnout. It took awhile for the smoke to clear before you could see the cars. The Corvette pulled off the win when the Cuda got a little sideways and had to let off.

Winner
Bob Rosetty
Driver of
Rollin' Stoned

Third pair was the Tweety's Rat taking on The Sharky's machine Omni. Both cars seem to be ready for one another as they did great burnouts and talked to one another through some dry hops. It turns out the Rat must have been a little bit afraid of The Shark as he left on him and stayed out in front.

Last pair was the two fastest from the first round. That was Sweetman Brothers Citation taking on The New Generation Corvette. Again we had two clutch cars running each other, both did killer burnouts and some old style dry hops. After a year off Drew was not rusty at all pulling a .044 light. The Citation stayed in front taking the win with a 7.17/185 to The Corvette’s 7.29/192.

The GLNFCC put on one great show and Beaver Bob’s team gave us a great racetrack. If you have never been to Beaver Springs you must go. Beaver Bob knows how to treat the spectators.

Thanks again to Good Vibrations for Sponsoring The Reaction Time Award which was won by Bob Rosetty in the Rollin' Stoned Cuda. Next Stop Thompson Raceway Park on June 5th.

Kil-Kare Funny Car Show
May 15th, 2010
Kil-Kare Dragway, Xenia, OH

Photos by Richard Waters
The GLNFCC headed to Kil-Kare Dragway in Xenia, Ohio for our first event for the season. This was to be a eight car show head lining the GLNFCC.

The day started out warm and sunny, which brought out a lot of spectators. All of the cars that were scheduled for this event had previously tested and were ready to put on a show.

Kil-Kare used to have frequent funny car shows through the years but had not had a full eight car show for many years. We were looking forward to giving the crowd a good dose of funny car fever.

The Detroit Thunder crew decided to make a test pass in the afternoon. Once the car was on the line and they fired it up it stalled. Attempts to restart the car did not work and it was determined they had a starter issue.

Once in the pit’s the team worked on the car and had help from several other teams. The team tried to fix the starter and also tried several donor starters but was unable to get the problem solved.

Photos by Richard Waters
First pair out was the Solid Rock 71 Mustang taking on the Blown Money 69 Nova. Both cars put out some good smoky burnouts and Rocky tried his hand at a few dry hops. Once the tree was lit the Nova took off first but shortly after that one of his chutes deployed . The Mustang took the win but the Nova still ran a respectable 4.81 with the chute out the whole run.

Second pair out was the Snakebite 79 Mustang and the Old & Confused 78 Corvette. As usual John Decort in the Corvette did a killer burnout. Mike Klontz in the Snakebite was off first but shortly became sideways several times. The Corvette took the win.

Next up was a pair of hemi’s. Lance Good in the Sharky's Machine Omni sporting new graphics for the season, taking on The Damn Yankee Vega. Both cars left hard and made two great runs. The Vega took the win with a 4.55/154 to a 4.77/135.

Last pair was Jerry Streb in The Dazed & Confused 69 Camaro taking on a new member, Monty Stotz in the Blue Thunder 69 Camaro. We had Monty at this race as a fill-in and when The Detroit Thunder could not make the call The Blue Thunder stepped up. Both cars took off for the burnout with the Dazed and Confused Camaro just filling the track with tire smoke, but the car shut off during the burnout and would not start so The Blue Thunder made a single run.

Photos by Richard Waters

As the teams prepared for the second round the spectators filled the pits checking out the cars and getting autographs.

It was determined that The Dazed & Confused Camaro had some sort of internal damage and the bottom end would have to be checked once they got back to the shop.

Second round came under the lights. First pair was The Snakebite taking on Sharky's Machine. Lance knew he would have to have the Omni running strong if he expected to beat the bigger cubic inch Snakebite. Lance was trying hard and turned on the red-light, but that was the least of his worries. Some where about halftrack the Omni was all over the track. As it seem to settle down the car took a hard right taking out a few blocks and just narrowly missing the Snakebite car.

Winner
Mike Klontz
Driver of
Snakebite
Second pair was the Old & Fuelish Corvette taking on the Solid Rock Mustang. Again the guys put down two powerful burnouts. The Corvette was out first on the mustang but appeared to have some mechanical problems as it slowed at half track. The Mustang took the win .

Last pair up was the Blown Money Nova and The Damn Yankee Vega. Both cars did short burnouts with the Nova trying a few dry hops. The small block Nova took off first and held on the best he could 4.64/148. But the hemi powered Vega caught him at the stripe.4.589/157.

The Blue Thunder Camaro made a single to close out the show.

The reaction time award went to Mike Klontz in the Snakebite with a .436 reaction.

At the end of the night the spectators got their moneys worth. Everyone seemed to leave happy and the Kil-Kare staff commended our performance.

We would like to thank the Kil-Kare staff for giving us a great race track and allowing us to bring our traveling funny car show to their track.

We would also like to thank Good Vibrations and Mickey Thompson Performance Tires & wheel for supporting The GLNFCC.

Next Up Beaver Spring on May 29th for a eight car show. Plus we have a four car show scheduled at SkyView Dragway also on May 29th as part of their Old School Night.
